How to add cyanuric acid stabilizer

Confirm CYA is actually low, dissolve stabilizer slowly at a return jet, and give it up to a week before retesting.

  1. Test CYA in bright lightRead the turbidity test in bright outdoor light with your back to the sun, and avoid adding stabilizer if CYA is already high.
  2. Calculate the doseUse this calculator with your gallons, current CYA, and target CYA.
  3. Dissolve it slowly at a return jetPut granular stabilizer in a sock and hang it in front of a return jet — don't dump it dry, since it forms gummy lumps and takes a week to dissolve on its own.
  4. Wait before retestingWait several days before trusting the new CYA reading, and don't backwash or drain right after adding it.

Pro Take

You can do this yourself. Or you can stop chasing it.

High CYA is one of the most common reasons pools stop responding to chlorine. A&M can verify the level and fix the root problem.

How to test

Get the reading before you dose

Use a CYA turbidity test and read it in bright outdoor light with your back to the sun.

  • Do not backwash or drain immediately after adding granular stabilizer.
  • Wait up to a week for CYA to fully show on a test.
  • Avoid adding stabilizer if CYA is already high.

FAQ

Cyanuric Acid Stabilizer Calculator FAQs

What does the stabilizer calculator dose?

It doses the increase from your current CYA to your target CYA using either granular stabilizer or liquid conditioner, depending on which product you select.

Why should I not enter a target above the normal CYA range?

High CYA makes chlorine less active and usually requires higher FC targets. The calculator is best used to raise low CYA into range, not to push an already stable pool higher.

How soon should I retest after adding granular stabilizer?

Wait several days before trusting the new CYA reading. Granular stabilizer dissolves slowly, so an immediate test can make it look like the calculator under-dosed.
