If you are shopping for a pool filter — or trying to figure out what is wrong with the one you have — there is a good chance Pentair is on your radar. Pentair is one of the two dominant brands in residential pool equipment (the other being Hayward), and for good reason. They make reliable, well-engineered filters. But choosing the right one and keeping it running takes some knowledge. Here is everything you need to know.
How Do I Choose the Right Pentair Pool Filter?
Pentair makes three types of pool filters, each with distinct advantages:
Cartridge Filters (Pentair Clean & Clear Series)
- Best for: Most residential pools, especially in-ground pools up to 30,000 gallons
- How they work: Water passes through a pleated cartridge that traps particles down to 10–15 microns
- Maintenance: Remove and hose down the cartridge every 4–8 weeks. Replace the cartridge every 1–2 years.
- Pros: Easy maintenance, no backwash water waste, excellent filtration quality
- Popular models: Clean & Clear Plus 420, Clean & Clear 200
Sand Filters (Pentair Sand Dollar / Tagelus Series)
- Best for: Larger pools, pools with heavy debris loads, owners who want minimal hands-on maintenance
- How they work: Water flows through a bed of special filter sand that traps particles down to 20–40 microns
- Maintenance: Backwash when pressure rises 8–10 PSI. Replace the sand every 5–7 years.
- Pros: Very low maintenance, long media life, handles heavy loads well
- Popular models: Tagelus TA60, Sand Dollar SD80
DE Filters (Pentair FNS Plus / Quad DE Series)
- Best for: Pool owners who want the clearest possible water
- How they work: Diatomaceous earth (a fine powder) coats internal grids and filters particles down to 2–5 microns — the finest filtration available
- Maintenance: Backwash and recharge with fresh DE powder. Full teardown and grid cleaning 1–2 times per year.
- Pros: Best water clarity of any filter type, crystal-clear results
- Popular models: FNS Plus 60, Quad DE 60
Sizing Your Filter
Filter size is measured in square feet of filtration area. The general rule:
- Up to 15,000 gallons: 100–200 sq ft (cartridge) or 3.1 sq ft (sand)
- 15,000–30,000 gallons: 200–420 sq ft (cartridge) or 4.9 sq ft (sand)
- 30,000+ gallons: 420+ sq ft (cartridge) or larger sand/DE
Oversizing is always better than undersizing. A larger filter runs at lower pressure, lasts longer between cleanings, and provides better flow. When in doubt, go one size up.
How Long Should Pentair Pool Filters Last?
Filter lifespan depends on the component:
- Filter housing (tank): 15–25+ years with proper care. Pentair's fiberglass-reinforced tanks are built to last.
- Cartridge elements: 1–2 years with regular cleaning. Heavy use or poor water chemistry shortens this.
- Sand media: 5–7 years. The sand grains smooth out over time and lose filtering ability.
- DE grids: 5–10 years. Grids can tear or develop holes over time.
- O-rings and gaskets: Inspect annually. Replace when cracked or compressed. Keep lubricated with silicone-based lube.
If your filter is more than 15 years old and needs frequent repairs, it is usually more cost-effective to replace the entire unit than to keep fixing it.
Common Problems with Pentair Pool Filters
Even good equipment has issues. Here are the most common Pentair filter problems we see:
1. High Filter Pressure
Cause: Dirty cartridge, saturated sand, or clogged DE grids.
Fix: Clean or replace the filter media. If pressure stays high after cleaning, the media is worn out.
2. Low Filter Pressure
Cause: Pump issue, air leak on the suction side, clogged skimmer basket, or closed valve.
Fix: Check the pump, inspect plumbing connections, and clear any obstructions.
3. Filter Leaking at the Band Clamp or Top
Cause: Worn or improperly seated O-ring, cracked tank, or loose clamp.
Fix: Replace the O-ring, lubricate with silicone, and re-seat the clamp. If the tank is cracked, replacement is needed.
4. Dirty Water Returning to the Pool
Cause: Torn cartridge, channeled sand, or torn DE grid allowing dirty water to bypass filtration.
Fix: Inspect and replace the damaged filter media.
5. Short Filter Cycles (Needs Cleaning Too Often)
Cause: Undersized filter, high bather load, algae bloom, or old media that can not hold debris.
Fix: Address the root cause. May need a larger filter or fresh media.
Pentair vs. Hayward: Which Is Better?
This is the question we get asked most often. The honest answer: both are excellent brands, and we service and install both. Here is how they compare:
| Feature | Pentair | Hayward |
|---|---|---|
| Build quality | Excellent. Fiberglass-reinforced tanks. | Excellent. PermaGlass XL tanks. |
| Cartridge filters | Clean & Clear series — industry standard | SwimClear series — comparable performance |
| Sand filters | Tagelus / Sand Dollar | Pro Series / S-Series |
| Ease of maintenance | Slightly easier cartridge removal on some models | Simple, straightforward design |
| Parts availability | Widely available | Widely available |
| Price range | Mid to premium | Budget to mid |
| Smart integration | IntelliCenter ecosystem | OmniLogic ecosystem |
Our recommendation: If you already have Pentair equipment (pump, automation), stick with Pentair for compatibility. Same goes for Hayward. If you are starting fresh, either brand will serve you well. We slightly favor Pentair for their cartridge filters and Hayward for their variable-speed pumps, but both are solid choices.
